This is Nebu's Diary...
When I saw this mare for the first time in Canton, I really liked her. Her name was Daisy. She was not the owners favorite, but was treated well for what she was- a PMU rescued broodmare. She was 10 months pregnant, 14 years old, and bred to an Andalusian Stallion. She was not as heavy as I like my horses and was not comfortable with human handling. I was only there to help her owner sell some of his herd so he could move out of town. At the first vistit I had no plan to buy anything, but I did like her.
When Daisy's owner called about a month later and said she was the only horse he had left to sell and did I know anyone who would want her- I knew I was the one who did! So I made arrangements with Encore Stables to lease a pasture they had available and prayed that my barn would be built before the foal arrived. 3/15/06
I called the owners vet, confirmed the pregnancy and the health records, then picked her up in a borrowed horse trailer, my trailer was too long for the barn space she was at. I thought she might not load, so I brought a friend and with excitement and fear, I wrote a small check, used an old halter that I had and headed to the trailer ready for a loading battle! She practically draged me into the trailer, I swear she loaded at the trot. I knew she wanted to be with me and I made the right decision. I decided to change her name because I had just lost a goat named Daisy and did not want to think abou that each time I looked at this wonderful mare. I came up with Nebu in honor of Nebulous, Who I often call Neb. I also like Star Wars and the princess was from Nebu and an Wikipedia search said Nebu was a symbol of Egyptian symbol for Gold. I liked it and that became her name.
My goal for the next month was to put as much weight on her as I could, to clean up her coat and make it shine and hope that in all this time with her, she would learn to trust me. It was slow at first. She was hard to catch and hard to lead without a chain on her nose. Eventually she learned to like butterscotch horse bites and that was all it took. She started to enjoy our time together and loved to be groomed, except around the belly. Her eyes started to brighten, and her baby started kicking at her sides. I knew I had better find a foaling stall, because my barn was not ready.
My friends Jim and Barbara came to my rescue. They leased me their foaling stall in their private barn and helped me watch for the foal, all night and all day. Then after staying all night and going home to change, the call came. "you better get back here there are four eyes staring at me in the stall now" It was a girl.
She made it so easy for me, there was no work and she did it all on her own. But then, she trusted me to come into the stall with her new born foal- Sonrisa.
I told myself I would not breed her again and I thought it would be the right decision. But now I have changed my mind. She is a wonderful mother and she feels its her job to raise wonderful babies. All horses need a job and she is ready for hers. I plan to breed her again in March. She has had a year off and March will give me another foal due in the spring of 2008. I have chosen Zander as the next stallion

6/13/07 Nebu has beed breed and in a couple of weeks we will know if she is pregnant.
March 2008- Well we know she is very pregnant and is Due on May 10th. I am looking forward to this baby, but I believe Nebu is dreading it. I swear this is her last foal as I do not have any more stalls and is seems the close the due date approaches the more withdrawn Nebu is becoming. I believe she dreads the days in the stall and the lack of free range turnout she is used to having. This is because I cannot risk her milk production being limited due to my Fescue grasses. She is still going out with the others until April 10th, then she will go out in a dry lot I have created and she will have her extra large 12x24 stall. This will the the first baby horse born at Nebulous Acres. To abide by the Friesian rules for naming foals, you have to find out what letters the year will start with and then choose a dutch name based on the gender. So 2008 begins with A,B or C. Most of the names I cannot pronounce even if I wanted too. I will keep you posted on the events as they occure.
